Privatised as the Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn. Bhd. with consortium members comprising of PETRONAS, MISC Berhad, Klang Port Management (KPM) and Penang Shipbuilding & Construction (PSC)
Awarded the Academy status via a government charter by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and renamed to Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM)
ALAM introduced the first Nautical Cadetship Programme in Malaysia to provide officer level training locally
The MATES (Malaysian Training and Education for Seamen) Foundation was established by its three key members:
- MISC Berhad
- International Shipping Carriers (Hong Kong)
- Ministry of Transport, Malaysia
- ALAM became wholly owned by MISC Berhad.
- ALAM opened its doors to female cadets.
- The first batch of female cadets enrolled at ALAM for Diploma in Nautical Studies and Diploma in Marine Engineering.
